The Rotterdam district Bloemhof has a village-like character of terraced houses and narrow streets, framed by a rather formal perimeter development. The original urban plan could not anticipate on the increasing car ownership of individual households, so the formerly green character of the rustic living environment has been disturbed severely by parking cars.
Due to problems with outdated sewage and building fundaments, the district currently suffers from 'sinking houses'. When asked to re-design a limited part of the district as an exemplary case study, the main objective was to re-vitalise the green character of the distinctive narrow street profiles and to strengthen the interaction of significant 'urban chambers'. |
