Estepona is a town at the Spanish Costa del Sol and is renowned for its beaches, which stretch along some 21 km of coastline. It is a popular resort and holiday destination. The attractiveness of Estepona is also reflected in the ongoing building activity along the coastline. In order to avoid excessive growth, protective measures have been postulated by the local municipality. Consequently, new residential developments within the Estepona area have to follow a strict set of rules and regulations. The framework is based on the spatial setting of the so called ‘Pueblo Mediterraneo’, an ideal image of the terraced small scale villages that are typical for the Andalusian region. ___ The urban layout of the project is based on the ‘courtyard principle’. The arrangement of buildings is concentrated along the perimeter of the plot, leaving out a generous opening towards the South and the seaside. The buildings are about three storeys high and contain a range of different apartment typologies, grouped around the common open space of the block interior. Apart from permitting a greater access of sunshine and open views to the seaside for the inner building fronts, the courtyard aquires the function of residential street, court and garden plot. House entrances, common facilities, mediterranean garden and swimming pool(s) are all in the court. While the courtyard setting, with its common amenities concentrated in the interior, contributes to a certain isolation of the whole from the public street, it enhances a sense of community of the residents.
