'De Bischoff', a listed building of the Dutch reconstruction period
(wederopbouwperiode) is a rather robust building situated on the market
square of Hengelo. Subject of the brief is to revitalize the building,
apparently having fallen into disrepair. The proposed intervention
is to add a layer of housing program on top of its commercial functions.
Intention of the project is to contribute to the discourse on contemporary
urban housing as a serious alternative to the suburban lifestyle.
The design comprises some of the main characteristics of the individual
row house but at the same time forms a symbiotic relationship with
the existing building and its context.
