Conceptual approach towards a 'landmark of hope and action’. A landmark that is symbolising the climate change and at the same time is stressing the ability for action:
The main idea is to 'recycle' an existing landmark of resilience.
Water management is part of the DNA of Dutch culture - so when the
water is up to your neck - ask the Dutch. One of the most sophisticated achievements in that field are the ‘defence lines’ (verdediging linies). They allow to inundate strategic parts of the landscape very precisely. This can be done for military purposes (actually it was the exception) but also as a buffer during
high water crisis management of the rivers. A series of water works and forts accompanies the defence lines like a pearl necklace. In order to estimate in how far a location is suitable to be upgraded as 'Climate Landmark' has to be investigated. This concerns the existing infrastructure, the environmental impact, permit conditions, architectural / structural state of the existing object etc. As a model for the proposed intervention, Fort Krommeniedijk has been
            taken.
Responding to the programmatic ambitions (to house immersive
exhibitions, permanent installations, hospitality, education and public
programming) a new physical structure is introduced to be build upon
the existing landmark. This structure can be rather utilitarian, providing
maximum flexibility - like a production hall or factory - hosting activities
on diverse scales and spatial requirements.
